YuZhu is sweet and neutral in nature, entering the lung and stomach meridians. It has the effects of nourishing yin and moistening dryness, generating fluids and quenching thirst. It is commonly used for dry cough due to lung dryness, dry throat and thirst, internal heat and thirst, and constipation due to intestinal dryness.
YuZhu is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Liliaceae family, 30-100 cm tall. The rhizome is fleshy, horizontal, cylindrical, with obvious internodes, pale yellow or pale brown surface, and solid texture. The stem is erect, single, and unbranched. The leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, 5-12 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, with acuminate apex, cuneate base, entire margin, green on the upper surface, and powdery green on the lower surface.
The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils, with a tubular perianth, 1.5-2 cm long, 6-lobed at the apex, with greenish-white lobes. There are 6 stamens attached to the middle of the perianth tube, with glabrous filaments and introrse anthers. The berry is spherical, about 8 mm in diameter, and bluish-black when mature. The flowering period is from May to June, and the fruiting period is from August to September.
YuZhu prefers a warm and humid climate, has strong cold resistance, and is suitable for growing in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam. The texture is solid, the cross-section is flat, horny, pale yellow or pale yellowish-white. It has a slight aroma and a sweet, slightly bitter taste.
